There are plenty of web sites which use WAV files in a way that launches the WAV player as a visible application. Some even launch it repeatedly, once for each time that a sound is played. The method used here (which I do not understand) works automatically and invisibly; or at least, it does so on my Windows system.

Internet Explorer 6 | Yes | requires javascript |

Mozilla | No | They can play WAV files, but not in the way needed here. |
Netscape 4 | Maybe | requires javascript. depends on which WAV player is installed |
Netscape 6, 7 | No | They can play WAV files, but not in the way needed here. |
Opera 5, 6 | No | They can play WAV files, but not in the way needed here. |
My copy of Netscape4 used to support these sound effects properly. Now it supports them only if I use it to read this page from a server. If I use it to read this page from my local disk, the sound effects do not work. I cannot explain this.
